An Open Invitation to Design Join

"An Open Invitation to Design" is a research project that explores collaboration, authorship, and derivative design using digital fabrication technologies and communication networks in furniture design. It specifically critiques the open design process and demonstrates the potential of open source methods as a generative element for design innovation. The project aims to create multiple chairs collaboratively through contributions from various individuals. Each participant is required to submit a digital file that is then uploaded and made a derivative of a base chair design on Thingiverse. These collaborative chairs will be produced at the FabLab in New Zealand and documented in a Masters Thesis on Open Design, with credits given to the respective authors. To participate, each part must meet two criteria: it must be manufacturable using specified machines such as a Shopbot CNC, Laser Cutter, or UP 3D Printer, and it must incorporate a standardized join that enables easy building upon of other parts. The chair is divided into three sections - legs, seat, and backrest - with the goal of having each part designed by a different person over time. The project provides a file to get started and encourages participants to leave build instructions and inspirations when uploading their parts. Any questions are welcome as the project aims to showcase design innovation through collaboration.
