An Egyptian Granite Head of Sekhmet
myminifactory
Sekhmet stood out as Egypt's most revered leonine deities. Originating from Memphite, she eventually became linked to Theban goddess Mut, Amun's consort. Sekhmet possessed two distinct personas: a perilous and destructive side alongside a protective and healing aspect. Her name translates to "powerful" or "the female powerful one." Due to her reputation for unleashing fire against foes, scorching desert winds were referred to as the "breath of Sekhmet." She was directly associated with plagues and wielded the power to ward off pestilence while functioning as a healing deity, as noted in her epithet, "Sekhmet, mistress of life." Typically depicted with a human female form encased in a tight-fitting gown, Sekhmet's lion's head often wore a sun disk.
