Amun quickly rose to become the patron deity of Thebes in the 11th dynasty around the 21st century BC. Following the rebellion against the Hyksos and under Ahmose I's rule in the 16th century BC, Amun gained national significance through his fusion with Ra, resulting in the powerful Amun-Ra or Amun-Re. This iconic representation of him features the god wearing a tall crown, possibly originally holding a sceptre to symbolize imperial power, and an ankh, representing eternal life.
