An amphora (Ancient Greek:amphoreus; English plural: amphorae or amphoras) is a type of container that boasts a characteristic shape and size, dating back to at least the Neolithic Period. These vessels were used in huge quantities for transporting and storing various products, both liquid and dry, but mainly wine. They are often ceramic, though examples made from metals and other materials have been discovered. Versions of the amphorae were one of many shapes employed in Ancient Greek vase painting.
