Amphitrite at The Louvre, Paris

This stunning marble sculpture showcases Amphitrite, masterfully crafted by Jacques Prou in Paris between 1655 and 1706. Initially placed in Marly-Le-Roi's tranquil carp pond, the sculpture was later relocated to sit beside a majestic fountain featuring Amphitrite as its central theme. Both sculptures are now proudly displayed in The Louvre's permanent collection. In ancient Greek mythology, Amphitrite was revered as a powerful sea goddess and the devoted wife of Poseidon. However, under the influence of the Olympian pantheon, she evolved into simply Poseidon's consort, her significance further diminished by poets to represent the symbolic embodiment of the sea. Meanwhile, in Roman mythology, Neptune's consort Salacia, the goddess of saltwater, held a relatively minor position.
