Amphion and Zethus
myminifactory
Amphion and Zethus are the twin sons of Zeus by Antiope in Greek mythology. As children, they were abandoned on Mount Cithaeron but a shepherd discovered and raised them. Amphion grew into a remarkable singer and musician while Zethus became a skilled hunter and herdsman. In Euripides' lost play "Antiope," the two young men engage in a debate about which lifestyle is more advantageous: the quiet or active life; this passage has been frequently referenced in ancient literature. After reuniting with their mother, they constructed and fortified Thebes by building walls from massive stone blocks that came together at the sound of Amphion's lyre. Eventually, Amphion married Niobe but took his own life after suffering the loss of his wife and children. This object is part of the "Scan The World" initiative.
