Ammonite - Peltoceras
myminifactory
Peltoceras fossils are a treasure trove of ancient secrets from the aspidoceratid subfamily Peltoceratinae that roamed the Middle Jurassic landscape during the U Callovian era. The shell of these remarkable creatures is characterized by its evolute shape, where whorls barely touch each other, leaving most of them exposed to the world. The outer rim, known as the venter, forms a nearly flat surface along the lower part of the animal's body, much like the belly of a modern-day creature. As we examine the Peltoceras fossil, we notice that the inner whorls are adorned with strong ribs that branch out in multiple directions, forming complex patterns on the ventral margin. In contrast, the outer whorls feature large simple ribs and two rows of massive lateral tubercles, which grow larger as they develop along the shell's surface. Fossils of Peltoceras have been discovered in Shropshire, providing valuable insights into the lives of these ancient ammonites that once inhabited our planet.
