Americas Homeland: North America. Description: The American Elm is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 20 meters tall with a wide, rounded crown. It sometimes has multi-trunked growth. The bark is grayish-brown, and the bark of younger branches is smooth and green. Leaves are oppositely arranged, 15–37 cm long and compound in shape made up of 3–5 (7) short-petaled, egg-shaped, pointed, irregularly toothed leaflets (terminal leaflet sometimes tri-lobed). Flowers are unisexual, the species is dioecious and wind-pollinated, which is a peculiarity among elms. Inflorescences are many-flowered, hanging, and long-stemmed. Fruits disintegrate into two winged samaras, whose wings are 2.5–5 cm long. Flowering Period: Late March–April, before leafing out. Seed Maturity: From August onwards. Habitat: American Elm is often a cultivated ornamental tree that spreads in riparian forests and on ruderal sites. Reproduction and Spread: It reproduces sexually with seeds carried by the wind, and vegetatively through rooting of very brittle branches.
