A specimen of Homarus americana, identified as Ha388 01, was recently caught in a bottom trawl during the Fall 2019 NOAA NE Groundfish Survey in the Gulf of Maine. This particular individual exhibited clear signs of Level 2 Epizootic Shell Disease (ESD), with its carapace displaying severe thinning just prior to molting. To create an accurate model for photogrammetry, researchers were forced to carefully assemble the fragments of its shell.
