Today's structure is a full-scale replica of the fort built by the WPA in the 1930s. This version follows the exact dimensions of the original floor plan. Between 600 and 800 African-American workers died in 1862 building the fort due to subpar working conditions. Plans exist to excavate the site for their remains. https://battleofnashville.com
