The current model of America's Cup Schooner, America, is based on British Admiralty drawings, which had measurements for participation in the 1851 race. The waterline blueprint accompanying presentation images is my creation using this 3D model. The schooner has a length of 111', deck length of 95'6", keel length for tonnage of 79'62", beam for tonnage of 22' 6", draft of 12', forward draught of water at 7'0", after draught of water at 11'0", a main keel depth of 2'1", false keel depth of 0'2", and a displacement of 100t. Built by George Steers at William H. Brown Shipyard, New York City, circa 1850-1851, America was launched on May 3rd in time for the Royal Yacht Society regatta around the Isle of Wight, England in August 1851, winning unexpectedly. Afterward, the schooner was sold to an English gentleman who renamed her Camilla, then Memphis when she returned to the U.S. as part of a secret Confederate government purchase. She served as a dispatching vessel and blockader in the South Atlantic Blocking Squadron in 1862 before being decommissioned post-war. Later, she changed hands among private owners until presented to the Naval Academy in 1921. Tragically, she was destroyed by accidental roof collapse in a boat shed in 1941.
