Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (Livorno, July 12, 1884 – Paris, January 24, 1920) was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor based primarily in France. His portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by elongated faces and figures initially received little recognition during his lifetime but gained widespread acceptance later on. Modigliani spent most of his youth in Italy where he studied the art of antiquity and the Renaissance until moving to Paris in 1906, where he interacted with renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. Modigliani's body of work includes paintings and drawings. From 1909 to 1914, however, he focused mainly on sculpture, primarily producing portraits and full figures of humans in both his artwork and sculptures. Throughout his life, Amedeo Modigliani experienced limited success but after his death, he gained greater popularity and his artworks achieved high prices. He passed away at the age of 35 in Paris due to tubercular meningitis.
