My Echo is positioned upright on a shelf, causing the microphones to be situated directly above the ceiling, resulting in poor voice recognition capabilities. I've therefore chosen to place the device horizontally, allowing the microphones to face into the room, whereupon both recognition and audio quality have dramatically improved.
