Amazon at The Palace of Versailles, France
myminifactory
This stunning marble sculpture from 1685-1693 was skillfully crafted by French sculptor Jacques Buirette (1631-1699), who drew inspiration from a series of original Amazon sculptures. In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a fierce and powerful tribe of woman warriors, known for their bravery in battle. Herodotus placed them in a region bordering Scythia in Sarmatia, now modern-day Ukraine, while other historians located them in Anatolia or Libya. Notable Amazon queens include Penthesilea, who fought alongside the Greeks during the Trojan War, and her sister Hippolyta, whose magical girdle was coveted by Hercules. Amazon warriors were often depicted battling Greek soldiers in classical art, a theme known as amazonomachies. The Amazons have been linked to various historical figures throughout the Roman Empire period and Late Antiquity. In Roman historiography, there are accounts of Amazon raids in Asia Minor. From the Early Modern era, their name has become synonymous with female warriors in general. According to legend, the Amazons founded cities like Smyrna, Sinope, Cyme, Gryne, Ephesus, Pitania, Magnesia, Clete, Pygela, Latoreria, and Amastris; they also invented the cavalry.
