The Scythian women known as the Amazons were fierce warriors who were mythologized in Greek mythology as a powerful force of female fighters. Herodotus documented their connection to the Scythians, an Iranian people, and placed them in a region adjacent to Scythia in Sarmatia, which is now modern-day Ukraine. Historiographers also located them in Anatolia or Libya. Famous Amazon queens include Penthesilea, who participated in the Trojan War, and her sister Hippolyta, whose magical girdle, given by their father Ares, was a central object of Hercules' labors. In classical art, Amazon warriors are often depicted battling Greek warriors in amazonomachies. Throughout the Roman Empire period and Late Antiquity, the Amazons have been associated with many historical figures. In Roman historiography, there are accounts of Amazon raids in Anatolia that require further investigation. From the early modern era, their name has become synonymous with female warriors in general. According to legend, the Amazons founded cities and temples such as Smyrna, Sinope, Cyme, Gryne, Ephesus, Pitania, Magnesia, Clete, Pygela, Latoreria, and Amastris. They are also credited with inventing the cavalry, a significant achievement in military history.
