In ancient mythology, fearless female warriors known as Amazons clashed with the Greeks in epic battles. These captivating yet formidable women presented Classical sculptors with the chance to showcase the unveiled female breast, sparking a new era of artistic expression. This statue reproduces an iconic Greek original depicting a wounded Amazon beneath her right breast, showcasing the artist's mastery of the human form. The sculpture was one of several entries in a prestigious competition at the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, western Asia Minor, around 440 BC. According to historical records, the contest was judged by the sculptors themselves, with each voting for their own work and awarding second place honors to Polykleitos' masterpiece, making him the winner. Kresilas received third prize.
