Cubist Sculpture by Modigliani Captured at Centre Pompidou. Prior to concentrating exclusively on painting from 1914 forward, Amedeo Modigliani was primarily a sculptor. As a fellow traveler of Cubism rather than a self-proclaimed Cubist, he created works that demonstrate similar aesthetic preoccupations as his comrades. Displayed in the Cubist room of the 1912 Salon d'Automne, these large, slender heads are not unrelated to contemporary sculptures by Brancusi, whom he visited in Italy during the summer of 1908. His stone figures characterized as having a Gothic spirit draw from numerous primitivist sources including Celtic sculpture, archaic Greek statuary, Khmer Buddhas, and Baoulé masks from the Ivory Coast.
