330 North Wabash, formerly IBM Plaza and also known as IBM Building, has been renamed AMA Plaza. This skyscraper is located in downtown Chicago, Illinois, United States, at 330 N. Wabash Avenue. The renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed this building, but unfortunately passed away in 1969 before construction started. A small sculpture of the architect by Marino Marini can be seen in the lobby. This 52-story structure sits on a plaza overlooking the Chicago River and stands at an impressive 695 feet (211.8 meters) tall, making it Mies van der Rohe's second-tallest building, with the Toronto-Dominion Bank Tower being the tallest at the Toronto-Dominion Centre. The building is his last American project. The corporate namesake that previously occupied this space no longer owns or has offices here. IBM sold Plaza IBM to the Blackstone Group in 1996 and by early 2006 had mostly moved out, relocating to the new Hyatt Center building closer to Union Station. Current major tenants include the American Medical Association, Langham Chicago managed by Langham Hotels International, and law firm Latham & Watkins. Former prime tenants IBM and Jenner & Block have moved to other locations in Chicago. The former IBM Plaza features several design elements that are rare in office buildings but understandable given its original owner. Its electrical system, environmental system, floor strength, and ceiling height (on certain floors) can support large "raised floor" computing centers. Additionally, the intelligent elevator system is a model of efficiency and rarely keeps anyone waiting for service. During the 1992 Chicago Flood, IBM Plaza remained dry. In 2007, plans were announced to convert floors two through thirteen into a high-end hotel. The Langham, Chicago opened in 2013, occupying these same floors. The building was declared a Chicago Landmark on February 6, 2008 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 26, 2010. It is also the newest building in Chicago in terms of age on both lists. On December 9, 2011, the American Medical Association announced it would move its headquarters and entire workforce to 330 N. Wabash from its previous headquarters on State Street. The move occurred in September 2013, and the building was subsequently renamed AMA Plaza.
