AM8 BLV mgn12 2040 removable purge bucket
prusaprinters

Update 5/31/2019: Printed and tested. It works fine. Added v2 of the purge bucket. I moved it in closer to the mount by halfway merging the legs, and also made them pretty with some hawt fillets. I have such little space between the nozzle and bed that I need that extra bit, but for most setups you're probably perfectly fine with v1. WIP status removed.

Update 5/29/2019: Shortened the legs to make it easier to remove and made the bucket narrower. I placed it into an assembly of the BLV mod and found it was too wide. Since I've seen the entire assembly of everything, I don't think anything should stop this from being fully working! As always, I have provided to Solidworks files to modify it to your needs.

This is a purge bucket, specifically for the AM8 BLV mgn12 mod. It should work on the original AM8 as well, or any 2040 extrusion-based printer.. I have my starting gcode to purge a bit of filament at the home position, which would then just stick to the side of the bed once it moves into print position. That method works fine, but I would usually pull that strand off as soon as the print started.

I designed it all in Solidworks and fitted the assembly together to make sure it... fits.. My setup is such that I only have 2mm between the nozzle and the bed when X=0. I plan on mounting this to theinside extrusion on my Y axis. I have posted all CAD files so if you like it, go ham. If it's too narrow for your build, let me know or extend it yourself.

It is a chamfered and filleted mess, with crazy tolerances. I wanted to make sure it slides out easily, and was therefore not permanently mounted. Feedback welcome and appreciated. The overall height should be 39mm, so it should fit nicely on the side of your 2040 extrusion and not cause obstruction.

Print Settings

Rafts:

Doesn't Matter

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2mm

Infill:

Any

Filament: Inland Color change by temp PLA Gray to natural

Notes:

It doesn't need to be particularly strong, or probably even particularly accurate. But the insert leg posts on the back of the bucket pose an issue for printing. I printed this standing vertically (as in legs at bottom, the same orientation in which it will be installed). For v1, I sunk the model into the build plate a bit (like 1mm) to make the bottom of the posts more flat, and added a brim. v2 may have enough flatness to just add a brim. Supports will be mandatory, but I had no issues printing like that. I use Cura, 15% density, zig zag infill, with 3 layers of interface.
I printed it in color changing (by temp) PLA so that maybe I could observe a neat, short-lived color change. Any material should be fine, but I chose PLA so that maybe the purge could just slightly stick to the inside of the bucket.

Category: 3D Printer Parts
