The I-14 was a Type AM submarine that served as a more advanced version of the preceding A2 class submarines. To accommodate its enlarged aircraft hangar, the command facilities were replaced with additional space for storing an Aichi M6A1 floatplane bomber pair. The I-14 displaced 3,661 tonnes when surfaced and 4,838 tonnes when submerged, showcasing impressive dimensions. The submarine measured 113.7 meters in length, had a beam of 11.7 meters, and a draft of 5.9 meters. Its remarkable diving depth was 100 meters. The I-14's performance on the surface allowed it to achieve speeds of up to 16.75 knots, while underwater, it could reach speeds of 5.5 knots. The submarine was designed for extended missions, boasting an impressive range of 21,000 nautical miles when traveling at 16 knots on the surface. When submerged, its range dropped to a still respectable 60 nautical miles at 3 knots. The I-14's test depth reached 100 meters, and it had a crew of 108. The submarine was equipped with six bow-mounted torpedo tubes that could fire torpedoes up to 533 millimeters in diameter. It also featured a single 14-centimeter deck gun and various anti-aircraft guns. For its aircraft complement, the I-14 carried two Aichi M6A Seiran floatplanes, which it launched from a catapult installed on board.
