Aluminum Mendel

thingiverse

This compact, lightweight printer is inspired by MendelMax and contains all parts within its frame. The Z-axis motors are positioned low for stability, while thrust bearings support the weight. Unique to this design, the aluminum extrusion serves as a guide for the Z-axis, saving both space and money. Linear bearings and belt and pulley upgrades ensure high-quality prints. All dimensions allow for easy printing of all parts using 4 smooth rods and 2 threaded rods from your Mendel kit. Easy-to-print components do not require support, while the 60W onboard power supply powers the motors and extruder heater. The heated bed utilizes a 120VAC and a solid state relay. Accessibility of the extruder is enhanced for maintenance purposes. Optional heatsinks on the extruder help dissipate heat when working with ABS filament. Exploded views of the X-axis and frame drawings are available, along with wire clips and T-slot covers for Misumi extrusions on Thingiverse. Inventor source files, BOM, and .stp files are also provided. A video showcasing this printer's functionality can be found on YouTube. Note that the Stepper Plastruder used in this design has been changed by MakerGear and will no longer fit on the x-carriage. The low mass gearExtruder (available at thingiverse.com/thing:61818) is a suitable replacement, offering improved performance. PLA parts can be tapped using 6-32 and 8-32 taps, which can be purchased from any hardware store. Drilling appropriate-sized holes for sheet metal screws provides a stronger alternative to captive nuts. A detailed exploded drawing is being considered for assembly assistance, and Autodesk Inventor source files will be provided upon request. Although the Full BOM initially missed two items – four stepper motors and two 608ZZ bearings (available at Ultimachine.com) – these have been noted and corrected. Please let us know if any other omissions exist in the BOM.
