Human: Video of it printing here: https://youtu.be/bAI9mNnLWFo. I still had some wiring cleanup remaining, and I will reprint the blower fan mounts in black. Additionally, there is a bit of stringing present due to retraction tuning. This 3D printer is an Ultimaker 2 derivative called the Alumimaker 2, offering several design improvements while maintaining easy modification and expansion capabilities for its build volume (most easily adjusted in Z, but also straightforward in X and Y.) The main reason behind creating this printer was to experiment with the Ultimaker 2 motion system and develop a printer that is easy to upgrade to dual extrusion. It leverages various stock parts from the Ultimaker 2 design, using them as a basis for an upgraded build. Improvements: ================ • Easily modifiable/upgradable chassis • More rigid frame • Direct drive motors eliminate compounded backlash in X & Y • Grub screws on radial bearings remove linear shaft displacement • Enhanced electronics (Smoothieboard derivative w/ DRV8825) • Increased Z build height • Reduced cost Specifications: ================= External Dimensions: 340 x 350 x 470 Bowden extruder (Stock Ultimaker 2 or an alternative option) Build Volume: 225 x 230 x 320 for this particular build, yet easily expandable Single-extrusion setup for this build, but there's a mount on the print head for an additional hot end; dual extrusion is trivial to set up Print speed: 30-300mm/s Heated bed Smoothieware-compatible electronics. This project remains a work in progress. I am publishing a detailed log at https://sites.google.com/site/alumimaker2/build More photographs can be seen at https://flic.kr/ps/2Zb9za I shared the Bill of Materials and further details on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/2rzjwc/misumi_usa_contest/cob4802 Instructions BOM Updated 5/5/15: These are all the necessary basic parts, but I have left out a few items currently. You can use the Ultimaker 2 stock extruder. If so, get the most torque-efficient stepper you can find (0.9 degree), but for my case, I opted for an alternative bowden extruder using NEMA17 and an integral planetary gearbox. For electronics, select whatever options best suit your needs. You may obtain OEM UM2 electronics from AliExpress or opt for SmoothieBoard, RAMPS, or UM1 electronics.
