Altoids Tin Staunton Chess Pieces

Altoids Tin Staunton Chess Pieces

These are the pieces for my Altoids Tin Chess Board. They're designed to accept 4 mm X 2 mm disk magnets, which can be found cheaply in quantities of 500 on eBay from China for under $10. I was trying to figure out how to make a magnetic chess set without using too many magnets, and I realized that a flat steel sheet would work, but I didn't have one. That's when it occurred to me that these tins would be perfect - I had tons of them on hand, and they only cost a few dollars anyway. You can also use them as magnetic hooks for your fridge or car hood. The pieces fit upright with the lid closed just fine, measuring about 7 mm in diameter at the base of each piece. Don't forget to print out the board as well - it's available on Thingiverse. I'd like to give a shout-out to PerryT for creating the original models that inspired this design.
