The Altoids Fishing Kit "sunfisher" 1.0 is exactly what its name implies - a tiny fishing reel designed to be entirely printable and compact enough to fit inside a standard Altoids tin. I got the idea while hiking in the mountains; I stopped to camp next to a beautiful stream for the night, and suddenly thought: "Wouldn't it be great if I had a small, packable fishing rod so I could catch one of these trout for dinner?" As its version number might suggest, this is the first iteration of the design, which may change over time. The reel itself is simply a hand-cranked spool with a small trigger that works as a friction brake on the drum. I find that casting works best if I pay off the line at my feet first and flip-cast the bait with both hands. To set up the assembly, use 4-inch zip ties (which fit neatly into the tin along with some of my favorite flies) to secure everything in place, including the eye guides to a long flexible branch or river cane. And then you're ready to go!
