Alternative IFV II: Revision
thingiverse
Full fancy new names being IFV-20-D, IFV-20-DC, and IFV-20-DL An Infantry Fighting Vehicle for a particular wargame in a universe where there is constant war, though I suppose it could be used in any tabletop game where it can fit the aesthetic, the models are at a 28mm "heroic" scale, and an IFV or something fitting a "light" tank role is needed. As someone who only plays casual games I decided to put my printers and modeling skills to use creating an alternative model as a project to do whenever I was bored. After iterating my other IFV design to what I felt was a pretty good state (check it out here https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4670954), and as I worked on some other alternative designs, overtime I started deviating more and more from the "inspiration" for them. Namely, being a bit of a tank/AFV nerd, I started incorporating features from real life AFVs into my designs, resulting in vehicles that look very different from the official models they are meant to proxy for, and sometimes basically being completely new ones. This is a revamped version of the IFV-20-C (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4674098). After revamping and updating the previous IFV-19 (the first AIFV) with more detail I felt (well, was compelled) to give IFV-20 the same treatment. This resulted not only in the base model getting more detail, but also 3 different hulls to choose from: >20D Hull – The base version of the vehicle class. In addition to the changes and addition of details it also differs from the previous version in being slightly taller than the C model. This transport is recommended to carry a max of 10 embarked infantry. >20D-L Hull – “Large” version, with the front slope of the hull reworked and turret ring most forward to increase transport capacity slightly. This transport is recommended to carry a max of 12 embarked infantry. >20D-C Hull – “Compact” version, retaining the original hull and tread height from the IFV-20-C. This variant is more meant as a cavalry fighting vehicle, for reconnaissance and transportation or specialist units, and has a prescribed troop capacity of 8. This version is also not meant to mount support weapons. Dimensions vary based on the hull, but a mostly identical being 4.75 inches long and 2.81 inches wide. D and D-L hulls are 1.75 inches tall and D-C is 1.63 inches tall (with Turret T2). Hull prints in one piece, however the "Treads" print separately and need to be glued on; there are recesses to ensure correct alignment. Both can be printed with supports touching the build plate. For the turret you have two choices, Turret T1 and Turret T2. The updated Turret T1E3 is non-articulated and is armed with an autocannon; This autocannon has been updated to match the one found on turret T2. Like Turret T2 it has also been updated to be able to mount a single use ATGM. Print with supports touching buildplate. It was originally meant to just be a place holder part, but it has been included anyway as an extra choice for people. Think of it as a budget option for your army. The Turret T2 is mostly unchanged, save for some minor dimensional changes and a mount for a single use ATGM. It still comes in 2 parts, the body and the top; both should be printed with supports touching buildplate, but the part of the top that interfaces with the gun may require some go-over with a craft knife after printing. I also now recommend printing the turret parts at .08mm layer heights or multiples of that number for better vertical dimensional accuracy. The major changes to Turret T2 comes with the armaments available. >AC17 L180 – An autocannon mount with a coaxial Super Heavy Machine Gun (SHMG) and coaxial HMG or LMG. The same autocannon is found on Turret T1. >C23 L200 – A small cannon mount, meant for when penetrative ability and bang is needed over quantity of fire. There are two variations of this mount, one with a coaxial armament of a SHMG and LMG/HMG, and one that replaces the coaxial SHMG with a coaxial, shortened version of autocannon AC17 (now L50). This autocannon retains the hitting power and payload of the stock autocannon, but pays in range for it’s shortened length. In addition to these there are the support weapons that can be mounted to IFV-20-D and IFV-20-DL (though these are not intended for the DC variant). The peripheral systems and ammunition stowage required for these systems to work means that troops cannot be embarked at the same time, turning any vehicles mounting these weapons into pure support vehicles. Naturally, support vehicles cannot use the rear firing ports, since no infantry can be embarked. >AM28-20 – An automatic mortar that fires in bursts, this mount comes with a coaxial SHMG and LMG/HMG mount. While it is possible to conduct direct fire and defend itself, it is recommended to keep vehicles with this weapon behind the front line. >AA T-AC18 L250 – An anti aircraft system using twin autocannons with a larger shell and payload than your regular autocannon, with an inline SHMG mounted between the cannons. There are two versions of the mount, one with and one without a tracking radar. The radarless version may have difficulties tracking aircraft, but will not struggle to target ground units like the radar version would, and can be used for general suppression duties. After selecting your Armament choice, simply insert it into the main turret piece, then glue the top piece over, taking care to not get glue into the gun recess. You also may want to test fit without glue before hand, to make sure it fits well enough. I am still iterating on this model, and I may update this thing with new parts or armaments in the future. If you have any feedback just leave it in a comment.
