This is one of several pieces commissioned from Juan de Liceire in 1551 for an altarpiece at the convent of Saint Augustine in Zaragoza. The original design was created by Damian Forment, a renowned artist who had previously instructed Liceire in the art of sculpting alabaster, a popular material used extensively in Aragonese Renaissance sculpture.
