Most altar frontals from the Romanesque period in Catalonia feature a panel painted with tempera, sometimes enhanced by stucco relief elements. However, not all altars conform to this standard format; some use fresco painting or carved stone or marble, and one notable example uses intricately carved polychrome wood. Various decorative elements, such as gilded effects, are used to replicate the appearance of luxurious items made from precious metals. The Altar frontal from Santa Maria in Taüll is part of a collection of artworks discovered early last century in the churches of the valley of Boí and stands out for its exceptional quality among the Ribagorza workshops' output. These works are characterized by their clean lines, robust vigour, and stylized forms, which have led to comparisons with monumental sculptural groups from the second half of the twelfth century. The composition and iconography of this altar frontal follow a traditional pattern. In the central register, Christ in Majesty is depicted inside the mandorla, surrounded by symbols of the Evangelists whose marks remain visible. On either side, figures of the Apostles are arranged on two levels under arches. The figures are carved from pine wood and retain significant traces of polychromy.
