Its skull was lightweight yet incredibly robust, boasting dozens of razor-sharp teeth that were expertly serrated for maximum effectiveness. On average, this magnificent creature measured 10 meters in length, though some fragmentary remains suggest it could have reached an impressive 12 meters or more. In contrast to its powerful hindlimbs, Allosaurus's three-fingered forelimbs were surprisingly small, but the body remained perfectly balanced by a long and incredibly muscular tail that served as a counterweight. As a member of the allosaurid family, this carnosaurian theropod dinosaur is classified with precision. The Allosaurus genus has a complex taxonomy, encompassing three valid species - A. fragilis being the most renowned. The majority of Allosaurus remains have been unearthed in North America's Morrison Formation, with additional material discovered in Portugal. For over half a century, it was known as Antrodemus, but a thorough examination of the numerous fossils from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry brought Allosaurus back into the spotlight and cemented its status as one of the most iconic dinosaurs.
