Fantasy model of a “monitor” The monitors of the 19th century were ironclad turret ships whose design was inspired by the original USS Monitor; as well as coastal ships that followed his design. The term “monitor” also included the more flexible parapet monitors and was sometimes used to generically describe any ship equipped with turrets.
