Allegory of Autumn (Bacchus)

Allegory of Autumn (Bacchus)

This magnificent sculpture of Bacchus rivals the esteemed commissions for marble portraits and figures ordered by Peter the Great of Russia from renowned Italian sculptors like Pietro Baratta and others for his majestic gardens throughout the Tsar's palaces. Notable parallels can be drawn with the exquisite female busts of Opulence, standing at an impressive 97 centimeters high with a base, and Autumn, measuring 95 centimeters in height with a base, both proudly displayed in the Summer Garden since 1736. The overall design of these sculptures is consistently grand in scale, with the flowing drapery falling unevenly across the shoulders playing a pivotal role in their ornate quality. Pietro Baratta was an accomplished Italian artist born in 1668. He left this world behind in 1729.
