The Palazzo dei Conservatori, home to an elected government body responsible for overseeing city administration, dates back to the mid-15th century. Originally, it boasted a portico on its ground floor, Guelf-cross windows on the first floor, and a row of smaller windows on the mezzanine level. Michelangelo later revamped the facade by introducing enormous Corinthian pilaster strips standing tall on high pedestals, flanked by pillars in the ground-floor portico. Like Palazzo Senatorio, this building was topped off with a balustrade featuring statues.
