Allegorical Seasons - Spring

These statues were carved by Pierre Mazeline (1632-1708) around 1690 in Paris. They represent the four seasons and were commissioned by King Louis XIV of France. Mazeline was one of his favorite sculptors, known for creating beautiful works at the Palace of Versailles. The Four Seasons were listed in a catalog after Mazeline's death in 1708 and later owned by Joseph-Marie Terray, who managed the finances under King Louis XV. For centuries, these statues have been kept safe inside private homes, remaining in excellent condition: miniature gardens of Versailles.
