Allegorical Caryatid
myminifactory
Sculpted female figures take shape as architectural supports, stepping in for columns and pillars that bear entablatures atop their heads. The term karyatides originates from the Greek words for "maidens of Karyai", a historic town situated in Peloponnese. A temple dedicated to Artemis stood tall in Karyai, its goddess revered as Artemis Karyatis: In her guise as Karyatis, she celebrated the dances of the nut-tree village of Karyai, where the karyatides danced with fervor, their heads adorned with baskets of live reeds, as if they were dancing plants themselves.
