ALL 8 PLANETS (paper + 3d print)
thingiverse
A complete set of planets! The process to make it is as follows… There’s an STL labeled “part1”. This is one hemisphere, so you will need to print two of course. I find one shell and no bottom layer with 5% infill works on my printer. Glue the two hemi-spheres together and sand the sphere as smooth as possible. I use drywall putty to fill in the layer lines/defects and later sand. It can look like a mess, but needs to be smooth to touch. Any remaining ridges will show through the paper skin in the next few steps.Under “prints” find the planet you would like to make. These gores were generated using G.projector which allows anyone to make their own sinusoidal projections from typical equirectangular maps. I've done this step for all planets but there may be a map you prefer to create yourself. End to end, the printed map should be 26.1cm in length to match the circumference of the sphere. Printing larger is better as printing too small will result in empty spaces on the globe. Cut out the map being careful to just barely exclude the white paper. Mark the poles of the 3d printed sphere with a pencil. Cover the applicable part of the globe in adhesive (I like Mod Podge as it works as an external finish as well). Carefully align the tips of one sinusoidal gore, with the poles marked on the ball. Gently press the paper onto the globe, one gore at a time working across the page. Make sure each gore sits flush and “seamless” with its neighbor. If it is easier to work, you can cut the gores to separate them from each other. Tips:Try desperately to avoid wrinkling the gores during application, but some are unavoidable. Minimize touching the surface of the globe while it dries as you will pull the ink off the damp page as it sticks to your hands. Small wrinkles can be flattened by using a pen or pencil and rolling the wrinkle flat. Try to do this before the glue under the page hardens, but after the surface dries. Paint, and/or an extra print out, can be used to cover up any seams or defects you might end up with. Best of luck!Grant
