'Alien' Facehugger Containment Tank for an Insect or Other Small Nasty
thingiverse
I have a pet ghost praying mantis that desperately needed a fresh new place to call home, so I ingeniously recreated the iconic facehugger containment tube from the first 'Alien' movie. To accurately model it, I scrutinized some high-quality photos, but refrained from getting overly obsessive about making it perfectly authentic. I'm convinced this design could be tailored to house a wide array of small animals, potentially scaling up the dimensions and adding silicone caulking for added durability - who knows, maybe even putting a fish inside? The perforations at the top printed out decently enough, but honestly, they should be omitted altogether; they greatly prolong print time without yielding impressive results. Since I was running short on patience and lacked screen door material, I opted to leave them in. Moving on... Enjoy! Instructions I created this design using readily available parts, however, you could easily modify the components and use alternative materials. My tools of choice were: - 4" diameter acrylic tube, approximately 7" in length - 4mm brass rod, cut to about 6 7/8" - feel free to adjust the length according to your needs I believe it would appear more striking with aluminum rod, but unfortunately, I didn't have any on hand. To get started, print all three parts, while making sure that only the bottom and top require support material. Print at a 0.2 layer height for optimal results. Upon assembly, you should notice that the components fit together rather neatly, thanks to my intentionally built-in tolerances. That being said, every printer is different, so your mileage may vary; I offer no guarantee it will yield identical results. If you're anxious about its integrity, simply scale up the parts by a modest fraction of a percent and apply some glue for good measure. But if you do that, you might as well admit defeat
