In 1924, Vittorio Jano introduced Alfa Romeo's first straight-eight engine, the 1987cc P2, featuring a common crankcase and four plated-steel two-cylinder blocks. This groundbreaking design won the inaugural World Championship in 1925. The following decade saw the introduction of the 8C engine, which featured a common crankcase with alloy four-cylinder blocks and incorporated heads. The 8C engine powered two models: the 8C 2300 (1931-1935) and the rarer 8C 2900 (1936-1941), with an increased bore and stroke, resulting in a larger displacement.
