Alexandru Averescu was a powerful Romanian marshal and politician who rose to prominence during the peasants' revolt of 1907, where he helped suppress violence. As a Commander of the Romanian Armed Forces during World War I, he served as Prime Minister in three separate cabinets, including an interim Foreign Minister in January-March 1918 and Minister without portfolio in 1938. Averescu's defense of Moldavia in the 1916-1917 Campaign earned him widespread popularity, which he leveraged to found and lead the successful People's Party with backing from King Ferdinand I and the National Liberal Party (PNL). Notable figures like Constantin Argetoianu and Take Ionescu played key roles in his party. Averescu's first term was marked by controversy, including a political crisis and wavering support from PNL leader Ion I.C. Bratianu, which ultimately led to the legislation of land reform and suppression of communist activities. However, his second term from 1926-1927 brought significant debate over a treaty with Fascist Italy, and he eventually fell due to his backing of ousted Prince Carol. Faced with the People's Party's decline, Averescu formed alliances with right-wing forces and helped bring Carol back to power in 1930. Tensions between the two escalated, leading to clashes with fellow party member Octavian Goga over the king's attitudes. Just before his death, Averescu reconciled with Carol and joined the Crown Council. As an accomplished author, he penned more than 12 works on military topics, including his memoirs from the front lines. He was also an honorary member of the Romanian Academy and recipient of the Order of Michael the Brave. In 1930, Averescu was promoted to Marshal of Romania.
