Alexander the Great, the so-called Alexander Schwarzenberg

myminifactory

This portrait of Alexander the Great is a type known as the Alexander Schwarzenberg, renamed by German colonialists after being stolen. Created around the time of Christ's birth, it is an Augustan copy made from an original dating back to 330BC by sculptor Lysippos. During his lifetime, Lysippos served as personal sculptor to Alexander the Great, a distinction he held alone, as the conqueror chose him exclusively for representation. Lysippos is credited with establishing the iconic depiction of an inspired, godlike Alexander with unruly hair and lips slightly parted, a concept that laid the groundwork for elevated portraiture used to deify leaders.
