Vincenzo Gemito's art was shaped by two powerful forces: Naples' vibrant street life and its rich ancient heritage, particularly the treasures within the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Born on the steps of a foundling hospital, Gemito's early years were marked by living among the street urchins he would later bring to vivid life through his art. In the chaotic streets of late 19th century Naples, Gemito tapped into his natural talents to rise above his circumstances and find work in Emanuele Caggiano's studio at just nine years old. With a remarkable gift for art, Gemito seemed largely unaffected by his master's influence, instead drawing inspiration from the raw energy of the city and its ancient artifacts. By 16, Gemito was showcasing his work at the prestigious Promotrice di Napoli, where it was purchased by the city. Although he traveled to Paris to exhibit his Neapolitan Fisherboy at the Salon in 1878, it's hard to discern any lasting influence from French masters on his work. Similarly, Gemito's own impact was largely confined to Naples, as his solitary and secluded lifestyle limited his reach. Throughout his career, Gemito remained a highly original artist.
