This captivating image shows a young man wearing the scalp of a lion as a helmet, with the lion pelt serving as the iconic symbol of the legendary hero Hercules after he defeated the ferocious Nemean lion. A similar depiction of a youthful, beardless Hercules donning a lion-head cap was featured on coins issued by the Macedonian king Alexander the Great to emphasize his lineage from the mythical hero; it later became a common representation in the coinage of Hellenistic kings, symbolizing Alexander himself.
