Alexander on a chariot

This bas-relief became part of the academic collections with a legacy from the Danish sculptor's heirs, who freed their study in 1844. The relief depicts Alexander the Great on his triumphal chariot guided by Winged Victory, reflecting the final draft of the theme Thorvaldsen created for Alessandro Torlonia in 1837, seen today at Palazzo Torlonia in Borgo. The initial conception of the group is visible in the frieze from the Entrance of Alexander into Babylon made in 1812 for the Napoleonic update of the Quirinale. Prince Alexander Torlonia, a patron who shared the name of the Macedonian leader, commissioned the stucco reduction of the Quirinale frieze for a room in his villa on Via Nomentana around that time. The survey was allegedly used by the Academy for educational purposes.
