Alexander Balfour, born on September 2, 1824, was a prominent Scottish merchant who made his mark by establishing the successful shipping company Balfour Williamson. A native of Leven, Fife, Balfour hailed from a family of entrepreneurs, with his father Henry Balfour owning a thriving foundry. Following his education at the prestigious High School of Dundee and St Andrews University, Balfour relocated to Liverpool in 1844, where he laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. In 1851, alongside Stephen Williamson and David Duncan, Balfour co-founded Balfour Williamson, cementing his place as a respected figure in the shipping industry.
