Aleph, two color
prusaprinters

This is a simple two-color remix of stevemedwin's "aleph" model (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:80016).

I used blender to split the original model so that base and the Aleph are each a separate color/material, flattened the base, and scaled the whole thing up so that the model stands just a hair shy of 110 mm tall. It was a bit over 130 mm for the previous revision, but I started from the original model again, and didn't scale it up as much.

Along with the separate "letter", "base", and "support" pieces, I've included my .blend file as well.

I originally intended these to be printed with a dual/multi-extruder setup, but you can also print these with one extruder, one color at a time, if you arrange the pieces properly and then "split" them (as Slic3r calls it). Use both support pieces for dual extrusion, and just "support 1" for single.

When the pieces are loaded, you'll find index/alignment squares next to the base. Position things so that the base's mark is to the right (+X) of the Aleph's mark, and the two supports' marks are right behind (+Y) them. Taken together, the four should form a perfect square with no gaps between them.

Update: 2016-07-15: Simplified the geometry a bit and made the model printable as separate pieces, without using dual extruders.
Update: 2016-07-16: added custom support material for the upper Yod, so that you don't have to use your slicer's automatic supports.
Update: 2016-07-17: put a ~0.2mm gap between the "support 1" piece and the upper Yod (it was adhering to the Yod too well)

Print instructions

Licence: Creative Commons - Attribution Category: Sculptures Print Settings

Printer Brand: RepRap

Printer: Prusa i3

Rafts: No

Supports: Yes

Resolution: 0.2mm

Infill: 15%

Notes:

With the low infill percentage, be sure you use an ample number perimeters and top solid layers. If you have an especially-good cooling setup, you can omit support objects entirely.

In any case, make sure you have GOOD anti-ooze settings in place if you're doing this with dual extrusion.

You may want to apply some custom settings to the support objects to reduce their density and number of perimeters, so as not to waste filament.

Post-Printing

Some trimming with an X-acto knife. Vapor smoothing recommended.

How I Designed This

I imported stevemedwin's original STL into blender, scaled it up, and did a "limited dissolve" over the whole model, with a threshold of 1 degree. Then I separated the Aleph from the base part, made both solid/manifold, extruded the bottom of the Aleph and flattened the bottom of the extrusion to create short mounting studs. I then copied those studs to a new object, scaled them up a bit, and used the result to cut corresponding holes into the base, with a nominal 0.15mm gap around all sides. Finally, I created custom support objects for the Aleph's upper Yod segment.
