Mexican folk art is known for its brightly colored sculptures of fantastical creatures called alebrijes. These unique art pieces originated with Pedro Linares in the early twentieth century. During his illness, Linares had a dream about a mystical place that resembled a dense forest. In this dreamlike state, he saw a mix of ordinary and exotic objects, including trees, animals, rocks, and clouds transforming into strange creatures. He dreamed of a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, and a lion with an eagle's head, all screaming in unison the name "alebrijes". Upon his recovery, Linares began recreating these surreal beings using cardboard and papier-mâché.
