Polys 963081\nVerts 1588976\nHeight is 22M\n\nAlnus, commonly known as Alder, is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the birch family Betulaceae. This genus comprises about 35 species of monoecious trees and shrubs, with some reaching large sizes, distributed throughout the north temperate zone and extending into Central America, as well as the northern and southern Andes.\n\nMost alders are deciduous trees with alternate, simple, and serrated leaves. The flowers are catkins with elongate male catkins on the same plant as shorter female catkins that often appear before leaves emerge; they are mainly wind-pollinated but also visited by bees to some extent. These trees differ from birches in that their female catkins are woody and do not disintegrate at maturity, instead opening to release seeds like many conifer cones.\n\nThe largest species include red alder (A. rubra) on North America's west coast and black alder (A. glutinosa), native to most of Europe and widely introduced elsewhere, both reaching over 30 m in height. In contrast, the widespread Alnus alnobetula (green alder) is typically a shrub rarely exceeding 5 meters tall.
