Order an 8" x 10" 3D Print\nThe United States mainland drops off dramatically into the San Francisco Bay, where the island of Alcatraz is situated a short distance offshore from San Francisco, California. This small island has been developed with infrastructure supporting a lighthouse, a military fortification, and a prison that was initially used as a military facility in 1868 before being converted to a federal prison in 1934. The federal prison remained operational until 1963. In November 1969, the island was taken over by Native Americans from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Native activism sweeping the nation at the time, leading to public protests throughout the 1970s. Alcatraz Island became part of a national recreation area in 1972 and received official designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
