Alberti Cipher Disc (Caesar/Vigenère Cipher Wheel)
thingiverse
A replica of the Alberti Cipher Disc is created using a laser cutter. The SVG file consists of several layers that can be combined in different ways depending on the material to be cut. For acrylic, the layers used are: engrave disc 1, engrave disc 2, cut disc 1, cut disc 2, and deep engrave disc 1. These layers result in a larger disc with a circular pocket where the smaller disc can rotate freely without additional fixation. For wood, the layers used are: engrave disc 1, engrave disc 2, cut disc 1 (twice), inner cut disc 1, cut disc 2, and thumb hole. These layers result in a back plate, an outer ring, and an inner disc that can move freely inside the ring. For paper and cardboard, the layers used are: engrave disc 1, engrave disc 2, cut disc 1, cut disc 2, center hole disc 1, and center hole disc 2. These layers result in two discs with concentric holes that can be mounted together using a clip or pin. This design also works well for most other materials if a screw is used to mount the discs together. See also the Confederate Cipher Disk and Union (Federal) Cipher Disc for more example images of how the finished discs look.
