Albert Square boasts its largest monument in the Grade I listed Albert Memorial, a tribute to the memory of the Prince Consort. The memorial features an imposing marble statue of Albert standing proudly on a sturdy plinth, gazing westward, all designed by the skilled sculptor Matthew Noble between 1862 and 1867. Atop the statue is a grand Medieval-style ciborium, its intricate design the brainchild of renowned architect Thomas Worthington. Noble was personally entrusted by the then mayor, Thomas Goadsby, to bring the Prince's likeness to life through his artistry, and Queen Victoria herself gave her royal seal of approval to the designs.
