Albert Josse Louis Mechelynck was born in Ghent on December 28, 1854. He was the son of Louis Mechelynck and Pauline Delehaye, whose father, Judocus Delehaye, had previously served as mayor of Ghent. Mechelynck attended school at the Koninklijk Atheneum on the Ottogracht, then went on to study law at the University of Ghent. He graduated in 1876. As a lawyer, Mechelynck became a member of the Provincial Council for Oost-Vlaanderen from 1884 to 1904. He also served as a liberal member of parliament for the district Gent-Eeklo from 1904 until his death in 1924. Additionally, Mechelynck was President of the Liberal Party from 1920 to 1921. In June 1925, a statue honoring Mechelynck was unveiled on the Sint-Annaplein in Ghent. The sculpture was created by Hippolyte Leroy. This object is part of Scan The World, a non-profit initiative launched by MyMiniFactory that aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures and artworks from around the globe for public access.
