
Albarello for red lead ointment

The majolica albarello, a type of earthenware apothecary vessel with an incurved middle section, is part of the collection owned by Mateusz Bronisław Grabowski (1904-1976). A written inscription appears in the center of the vessel: V[nguentum] de minio (Unguentum de minio), which translates to red lead ointment. This particular ointment, made from lead tetroxide (Lat. Minium), is combined with rose oil (Oleum rosarum) and beeswax (Cera alba). It was used for its anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of skin ulcerations.
